Well, I'm a human male with access to the internet.

Indie is Dead? (Part 1)

I’m gonna start off by releasing my undying rage upon indie music.  Honestly, I just don’t understand it.  To me, most of the time it’s just sound.

I understand the basic concept of indie music.  Experiment and discover new methods of songwriting without the tight control of a record label.  On paper it’s a great idea.  The way it is commonly implemented, though, confuses me.  In a paradoxical way, the freedom to experiment quite often leads to unimaginative sound and, frankly, boring music.  I guess if there was one thing to say about indie music of late it is that it simply bores me.  Let me add that it’s not the often spacey style of the music that loses my attention.  I appreciate the wistful rumblings of groups like Faunts and Radiohead but indie music (of today) just doesn’t carry itself in the same memorable way.  Distorted synths and whisper-quiet vocals only work so well.  There is a novelty to indie music, but I wonder if it is destined to become nothing more than a memory.

How many people enjoy industrial music? I doubt that many of you (meaning my younger friends) appreciate it; but it once was incredibly popular.  I’m not making a jab at anyone in particular.  I don’t listen to industrial music, myself.  Still, which groups emerged from the industrial movement and still thrive today?  Nine Inch Nails.  To someone who didn’t live through that time, it is very foreign to me.

Indie and Industrial music have many comparable aspects.  They are both experimental and go against the cultural norm for music.  I feel, though, that Indie is bound for the same fate as Industrial.  Of course, only time will tell.
